Past and Present:

HISTORY:

The First Baptist Church of Sealy, Texas was organized in 1876 in the corporate town site of San Felipe, Texas and moved to Sealy in 1878, located on Front Street.

For one dollar, the church bought land on the corner of Meyer and Fourth Street across from the Santa Fe railroad in 1887.  The church was located there until the building caught fire in 1934, causing the congregation to meet in the Episcopal Church building for several months (then moving to hold worship services in the parsonage). In 1938, the church borrowed $1,500 and built a new sanctuary.

During the late 1940’s, the land where the present sanctuary and education building are located, was given to the church.  In 1950, two World War II barracks were re-modeled into a sanctuary and Sunday School rooms. The sanctuary became the fellowship hall in 1956 when the church built the present sanctuary and parsonage for a little over $34,000.  The 1950 buildings were replaced by the present education building in 1977 and the sanctuary was re-modeled in stages during 1981-1984.  First Baptist acquired land in 1973 on the corners of Eighth and West streets as a gift from a church member.  The two acres on Eighth Street and the parking lot on Seventh Street were purchased.

TODAY:

Today brings even more changes to the buildings and congregation.  With the recent re-modeling of the entryway into the sanctuary and education center as well as the nurseries, these areas are better equipped to meet the needs of a growing congregation.  The parsonage has also undergone complete re-modeling and renovation to become the new offices and conference center to accommodate the church secretary, pastor, youth, music and education ministers.

Future growth is coming to the city of Sealy and to First Baptist Church of Sealy.  Sealy is on two major crossroads of Interstate 10 and Highway 36 while being located in close proximity to Houston.  People are moving into Sealy and the surrounding area at a steady rate with much commercial and residential growth happening.  First Baptist Church of Sealy likewise is growing and in a position to grow even more, internally and through evangelism with each family now in the church challenged to invite one family this year.  The church has plans drawn up for a family life center, new sanctuary and additional ground improvements.  New staff is being added as are new members.

Sunday morning worship services are very warm, friendly, informal and inviting.  Sunday morning worship averages 175-200, the music is a blend of traditional hymns and contemporary praise and worship.
